Mr. Merlin 1.5
A very slight story, even by the standards of this show. And no laughs.
- The plot, such as it is, revolves around a conniving cheerleader who is
dating both Zach and his best friend, Leo, to become “Mohawk Queen.” - In this episode Max Merlin is very much a father-figure to both Leo and Zach, really taking an interest in Leo’s well-being at the start of the episode. It really feels now as if he has embraced his role as mentor. The script also finds a way to make him Coach of the Mohawks.
- The magic in the story comes from the use of a device that will make the user(s) invisible. This is needed to help Leo realise the truth: All women are evil. Well, maybe not exactly that. But, still, this is pretty poor portrayal of a female character in a show aimed at a young audience.
- The comedy in the story, or rather “comedy” in the story comes from Leo being invisible and not knowing it. An idea with a lot of potential. Untapped potential. Because, before any hilarity can start, Merlin puts him to sleep and locks him away until a cure is found. A funnier show like I DREAM OF JEANNIE would have allowed the afflicted character to wander about for a while, causing mayhem and – you know – generating laughs. Not here. They squash the idea flat, right out of the gate.
- Speaking of IDOJ, it occurred to me watching this how much like Barbara Eden the gorgeous Elaine Joyce is and how perfect she would have been for a Jeannie revival in the 80s, had they decided to do one.
