Forever Knight 21

Cali Timmins. Two very good stories in parallel. One a flashback to 1966.

  • Most of this episode is set in 1966 and follows Nick as he befriends a family, while searching for an old book that might offer him a cure. He promises to get them out of East Berlin in exchange, and the drama comes from the race-against-time that follows: Lacroix, you see, has set the secret police onto them!
  • The other story involves a crazed gunman taking Natalie hostage at police HQ. It’s a more generic cop story, but it works really well here because Schanke is hidden under a nearby desk, waiting to pounce.
  • The start is great. Both storylines are up and running really fast. And if one doesn’t grip you, the other one will. Each alone could easily sustain an hour, but paired together like this they form an exciting episode.
  • The visuals are impressive. The East Berlin scenes are beautifully filmed.
  • The ending is great! Nick, alone, listening to his voicemail. Ever the lonely hero.

Made myself another wallpaper. The classic shows I’ve been watching so far this year.

Cynthia Belliveau. Two good stories here, which are dark and perfectly complimentary. It’s refreshing to see a supporting character take center-stage and Gary Farmer does a terrific job as the haunted Stonetree. The b-story (Nick’s) isn’t as satisfying as the main one, but it helps keep the episode moving forward. And the main story, while good, is much to straightforward to sustain a  full episode on it’s own. 8/10

Jennifer Dale.

  • Unsubtle but effective examination of our culture’s obsession with youth & beauty.
  • Most of the episode takes place on one night with a logical and satisfying progression of events as Nick and Schanke drive around the city in the aftermath of a murder.
  • There’s a high death toll in this one.
  • The fact that the flashbacks tie into the present day story comes as a surprise.
  • There’s a lot of dialogue about women and their desire to remain young and beautiful, and the script doesn’t always succeed in what it sets out to do. But most of it is thought-provoking and last scene is the best, and Nick’s dialogue about winter in that scene is understated and rather superb.
  • Great discussion between Nick and Nat about vampires and other supernatural entities in the world.
  • The internal logic of the characters is impeccable at all times. Loves many of the scenes. Particularly Schanke and the prison guard as our cranky detective tries to piece together exactly what happened.

Carrie-Anne Moss.

  • Such a clever idea: the juxtaposition of vampirism and addiction. So well executed.
  • Moss is fantastic. And her character is fascinating.
  • Has there ever been a TV hero as consumed by self-loathing as Nick Knight?
  • The music is great. Not just the songs in the nightclub (I love those!) but the Fred Mollin score is one of my favourite things about the show.
